Colouring Book Crayons

Colouring Book

July 13, 20234 min read

When we were children, we were taught to colour. To trace and colour within the lines. Sometimes we would go over those lines and to an adult, the picture would look messy. To the child in their eyes, they knew they had created a masterpiece; a one-of-a-kind piece of work because it was theirs. That kind of represents our life. We are taught to follow the rules, keep ourselves in check, and stay within our boundaries and lines. Well… sometimes life is not always like that!

🖍️

Unfortunately, we never know what we are going to get in life, or how our life is going to be. For some of us, our paths are never always straight; It’s zig-zag and all over the place like our childhood colouring books. For some of us, we break the rules whether intentionally or not. With some of us, we cannot find our boundaries, so we do not know where to draw the line and make things up as we go along; And, for some of us, we tend to feel like we’re out of sync with reality and embrace the imaginary; And the list goes on…

🖍️

I think we have learned by now that in life not everything goes according to our plans. Sometimes we take a big huge step forward, and other times it is a big step forward followed by more steps back to where we started from. Then rinse and repeat. The cycle just keeps on going round and round until you are disoriented at times. It is said, “Life is what you make it”. That’s true. We have to work hard at life and try to live it and not just exist. With all the twists and turns we find ourselves in, we try to make sense of it all, and that doesn’t always happen. Our life can feel like a children’s colouring book with scribbles and colours all over the place with no defined lines or boundaries. Absolutely no pattern to it at all, and in the eyes of the world… a complete mess. However, just like a child, they have created a masterpiece in their own eyes, and as adults, we can too! Last time I checked, there was no rule book to creating a masterpiece with our life other than to live it fully and learn the lessons that life teaches us. Most times, you don’t receive this from out of a book or manual. We keep it going and keep on moving the lines or going over it, so it becomes blurry and we don’t know where our boundaries are. Our life pages become messy with scribbles, drawings, and colours all over the place, but in the end, we still end up creating a masterpiece with our life. How can that be?

🖍️

With every mistake made, lesson learned, wisdom explored, and growth and development, our colouring life book hopefully should get better and better. We start to see a pattern of where there is a shift, and things start to become much neater and clearer. We find ourselves operating within the lines and defining where our boundaries are. But guess what, our life can still at times be out of sync, and we have to tell ourselves that’s okay. We do not always have to have things together for our lives to make sense, especially to other people. Your colouring book could be perfect, or your colouring book could be messy. You can still create a masterpiece that reflects who you are as a person, your life choices, and how you lived. You must stop allowing other people, family, friends, media, and anyone else to rent space in your head to tell and dictate to you how you must live and how you must have everything together first. That is not always the case.

🖍️

You might not have everything together at first and you must tell yourself that is okay too. Your colouring life book may not be perfect right now, and you may not get everything right, but you are still on your journey to creating a masterpiece with your life working with what you got. It may take some time, or take you on a scenic route, but you will get there. Don’t compare your journey to anyone else. Don’t compare your colouring book to anyone else. Yours is unique and special only to you and will make sense to you. You will glean from it, and keep your life moving as much as possible. Keep moving forward. Keep pressing upwards. Keep knocking on the doors you must access. When you have arrived at your location in life, whatever and wherever it is, just like what a Sat Nav tells you when you have arrived at your place of interest…

You have now reached your destination!
