What is a Cactus?

There are many different known species of Cactuses or Cacti that exist and are often referred to as desert plants. They grow in dry places – hot places, where other plants have trouble living. Their ability to store water keeps them alive to live in very dry and harsh conditions and environments. Cactus or Cacti are an essential part of the desert ecosystem providing shelter and homes for a wide variety of animals, and their roots help to stabilise the soil. Some of them have colourful flowers that bloom every year, and the Cactuses are also protected by sharp needles or spines. The majority of Cacti are a succulent plant with a thick fleshly stem which is the main organ used to store water – and the water may form up to 90% of the total mass of a Cactus.

Cactus fruits are an excellent source of Vitamin C, which is one of the best immune boosters – which can help your body fight off viruses. There are also other health benefits from the fruits it produces which also have anti-inflammatory properties amongst other things.8

• The lifespan of a Cactus can live for hundreds of years, especially outdoors with less time lived indoors.

• They are plants that adapt to their conditions and environments very well as they are best made and suited for them.

• They grow at an average rate of 1 inch every 8 years. A slow growth, but a very stable foundation rooted and built up.

• The Cacti are incredible plants that can grow up to 70 ft tall.

• It can weigh up to 6 tonnes – which is mainly the weight of the stored water.

• Cactus is a Greek word. The word "cactus" is derived through Latin from the Ancient Greek κάκτος (kaktos), a name used by Theophrastus for a spiny plant, which may have been the cardoon (Cynara cardunculus).

• Cactus spines are not thorns, they are highly modified leaves.

• Cacti come in all different shapes and sizes.

• Some Cacti are flowering plants that produce seeds. They are able to bloom every year, but they will produce an abundance of flowers in response to heavy rains.
